Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to support the needs of individualized repeated plaque control instruction through examination of changes on plaque control score by repeated instruction times.

Methods : Data were obtained from dental records of patients who visited the department of preventive dentistry, Kangnung national university dental hospital from January 2006 to December 2007. Among them, 173 patients who visited three to four times for plaque control instruction and whose intervals of each visits were less then 14 days were selected as subjects. Effect of repeated instruction was analyzed by repeated measures analysis of variance using generalized linear modeling method.

Results : Plaque control scores were enhanced by repeated instruction times(P<0.001). When patients visited for periodic recall, plaque control scores showed regressions but those regressed scores were still statistically significantly higher compared to baseline plaque control score(P<0.001).

Conclusions : These results suggests the needs of individualized repeated plaque control instruction rather than usual single-shot instruction. It takes three to four times of instruction to reach at proper level of plaque control score. Although those scores were regressed by time passage for two to three months than that of final instruction visit, they were still significantly higher than baseline. Thus repeated instruction has sustained effects for two to three months¡¯ periodic recall system.
